Switchboard operators who left
employment during dial office
conversions were not replaced. The
depressed economy and the decline in
demand for telephone service added
to the situation.

Switchboards here were used for years
before exchanges were converted to
dial. The early operator switchboards
shown offices.

Shown here is a working step by step
equipment rack that demonstrates the
circuit path of a typical telephone call.
The step office was used for many
years before it was replaced by
electronic switching systems which
now comprise the majority of the local
telephone network.
